TRANSIT SERVICES
In the Lake Tahoe-Truckee Area

In addition to the environmental benefits of transit services, transportation issues are critical to a resort community. Inter-city highways and transportation services form a visitor's first impression of a resort area. Poor conditions – traffic congestion, delays, inconvenient public transportation, or inadequate pedestrian/bicycle facilities – can dramatically impact a visitor's overall perception of an area and their desire to return. Enjoyable transportation experiences, on the other hand, can serve as an attribute to an area, attracting additional visitation. There are a myriad of public and private transportation services that serve portions of the Lake Tahoe Basin including the following:

TART

The Tahoe Area Regional Transit (TART) system began service on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in 1975. The system is currently operated by Placer County and operates from 6:10 A.M. to 6:30 P.M., seven days a week. The service operates on State Routes 28 and 89 along the northern and western shores of Lake Tahoe, from Incline Village, Nevada on the northeast to Sugar Pine Point State Park in El Dorado County on the southwest, and to Truckee via State Route 89. Service is generally provided on hourly headways with a base fare of $1.25. For more information or schedules, contact TART at 530-581-6365, or from out of the area call 1-800-736-6365.

Tahoe Trolley

During the summer only, Tahoe Trolley provides service along the northern and western shores of Lake Tahoe between Crystal Bay, Tahoe City, Squaw Valley and Emerald Bay. Trolleys operate from 10:30 A.M. until 10:30 P.M. seven days per week. Fares are equal to those of TART at $1.25. For information or schedules, call Tahoe Area Regional Transit at 530-581-6365.

Truckee Trolley

Year-round, the Town of Truckee operates a transit service between downtown Truckee and Donner Lake. During the winter, additional routes serve the SR 267 corridor between Truckee, Northstar and Kings Beach, as well as to Donner Summit ski areas. For information or schedules, call Aztec Transportation at 530-587-7457.

Blue Go

The Blue Go System is a new comprehensive public/private service on the south shore of Lake Tahoe.  The service currently operates seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Six routes are operated, three of which offer route deviation options. Service is generally provided on hourly headways, with twenty minute headways along U.S. Highway 50 between 10:00 A.M. and 7:30 P.M. Between September and May an additional single van (previously called DART) operates in Douglas County serving the lower Kingsbury area between Zephyr Cove/Round Hill and the South Shore Stateline area along Highway 50. The base fare for service is $1.25. Call South Shore Area Transit Management at 530-542-6077 for more information.

Bus Plus

Bus Plus is a demand-response "collector" service for the outlying areas of El Dorado County within the Basin, which began service in July, 1991. This dial-a-ride service uses vans to bring elderly and handicapped persons to the Wye area of South Lake Tahoe, where they can transfer to the STAGE buses. Call South Shore Area Transit Management at 530-542-6077 for more information.

Nifty Fifty Trolley

The Nifty Fifty Trolley was established in 1994 and currently operates two routes on the South Shore. Route A runs from Stateline to the South "Y" to Camp Richardson's Resort. Route B runs from Zephyr Cove to Stateline to Heavenly. In conjunction, during the summer season the service runs every half-hour between Camp Richardson and Vikingsholm/Emerald Bay. For the South Shore Nifty Fifty Trolley call 530-541-7548.

Ski Shuttle Services

Heavenly, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Ski Incline and Northstar are among the ski areas offering shuttle service. Ski Homewood's patronage is largely accommodated by the TART route (passenger fares are reimbursed by the ski area), although the resort does provide a limited shuttle route in the immediate Tahoma/Homewood area on the west shore. Service is provided by public and private providers on a contract basis or with vehicles purchased by the ski areas and usually consists of a few runs per day during the peak periods (at the beginning and end of the ski day). Ski shuttle services are generally not coordinated, however, transfer opportunities are afforded between ski buses and transit buses in the TART service areas by use of common bus stops.

Casino Shuttle Services

The major casinos have joined together to operate the Tahoe Casino Express between South Shore Stateline area and Reno/Tahoe International Airport. Within the Basin, Caesars and Harrah's have joined in an effort to provide service from area hotels and motels along the U.S. Highway 50 corridor to any of the casinos. Eighteen of these lodging facilities are equipped with a push-button system for service requests. This service, called "Park-and-Roll," is a free, demand-response shuttle service.

Other Services

Greyhound provides frequent service to the Truckee train station as part of I-80 corridor service. The Amtrak Thruway service also serves Truckee as well as South Lake Tahoe as part of The Capitols rail service. In addition, there are a variety of private van services connecting North Tahoe/Truckee and South Shore with the Reno/Tahoe International Airport.
